By Fr. Chris Wittman, SM Novice Director in the Marianist Province of the United States
A charism is a gift of the Holy Spirit given to a particular person for the sake of building up the Church, the Body of Christ. “The Marianist charism” refers to the gift the Holy Spirit gave to Blessed Fr. Chaminade for revitalizing the Church after the French Revolution. Chaminade developed this gift in collaboration with Mother Adèle de Batz de Trenquelléon and Marie Thérèse de Lamourous. This charism seeks to follow Jesus through the example and mission of Mary, his Mother. It strives, with Mary, to form persons and communities in a lived faith expressed in service and responsive to the needs of the times. So, there is only one Marianist charism, which bears fruit today in Marianist spirituality, mission, communities, ministries, Characteristics of Education, pillars, and much more!
